According to a disconcertingly short blurb in the Bookseller, Amazon may (finally) be launching the Kindle in Europe as early as next week.
The e-reader rumors have been flying furiously over the past couple weeks – primarily from Sony. The electronics powerhouse has been generating a lot of noise with Daily Edition (although it will be a year or more from hitting the UK market). There are also intriguing whispers that the next generation PSP will double as an e-reader – essentially creating the ultimate commuter toy. The suddenly-impending launch of the Kindle, however, trumps everything else.
Mad scientists doing pointless experiments have always cropped up in the headlines and this week is no exception. In a study titled ‘When Zombies Attack!’ researchers have predicted that the human race would not stand a hope in hell against the slow moving, brain eating, undead – unless we struck quickly and aggressively. Good to know, eh? Continue reading ‘Pointless Science’
Walking along the sun-baked riverfront on London’s South Bank today, I passed the understructure of the Festival Hall, which, as you probably know, is a mini-mecca for skateboarders showing off their various ollies, wallies and trollies (ok, so I made that last one up).
You’ll recognise the area by its panorama of colourful graffiti on every available wallspace. Well, every space except one. Continue reading ‘Killjoy was here’
Maddicts, for those of you who aren’t completely obsessed with the popular AMC show are Mad Men addicts…
Recently I noticed a rash of animated Facebook and Twitter profile photos and upon further investigation discovered Mad Men Yourself, a website that invites users to create an animated icon of themselves in the chic 50’s style of Mad Men. So while enjoying a quick lunch I decided to make myself an icon… insert nerdy advertising joke of your choice here… Continue reading ‘Listen Up Maddicts…’
So I’m off to see the U2 360 concert today. This will be the 6th time I’ve seen them in concert but the first time that they’ve actively reached out for my participation. Alongside Blackberry they are soliciting images from fans, inspired by their songs on the new album, which will be used to create a mobile photo album that fans can watch and download to their mobiles. It appears that those without Blackberrys will be slightly disadvantaged but as I’m in the “I’m alright Jack” category I’m not too bothered. You can check out the mobile album in the next few weeks at U2.com and I’ll let you know how the concert goes …
Canadians all over the country enjoyed a small victory yesterday when the iconic Tim Hortons brand announced that they would not, after all, be sponsoring “Marriage & Family Day” hosted by the National Organisation for Marriage (NOM) an American association that campaigns against gay marriage.
OK, so I may be a bit behind the times with this, but hey, it’s a real revelation.
I recently came across a piece of software that, when you download it to your computer, causes it to produce ultraviolet rays. Gone are the days of shambling home pale and wan from hours in the office: you finally can put all that time spent staring at your screen to good use, and will emerge sun-kissed and glowing in no time. Yippee! Before I knew where I was I’d clicked on the free trial, I’d aligned my face with the designated markers that appeared on my webcam, I was all set for calibration to kick in and begin my tan-tastic experience. Seriously. Continue reading ‘Computer Tan’
Big enough to hold a lot of info, small enough to carry with you. The timeless gift of the tablet.
I’m writing (with slightly embarrassed excitement) because rumours have been flying for ages that this fall, or early in 2010, Mac will unveil its very own tablet device. Nothing’s confirmed, but bloggers, geeks and technophiles everywhere have been speculating…on the product’s capabilities, capacity, size, shape…they’ve even gone so far as to mock up what it ‘might’ look like. See fanciful Photoshopped conjecture, below. Continue reading ‘Tablet = communication revolution?’
I always wonder when I see YT videos like this — will this get him a job? Or some sweet contract? Or his big break? (in the cut-throat world of Rubik’s Cube resolution)
Well, whatever happens -- you have to be impressed with this dude. Even if he memorized every move by rote, the dexterity and coordination required to do this are pretty phenomenal. God I hope you watched the video before you read that last line.
As a child, I grew up on Disney, watching all the old classics from Bambi to Lady and the Tramp, each story captivating my imagination while nurturing my knowledge of reality. Back then the innocence of childhood fairy tale characters was nothing more than a doorway to inspiration and creativity.
Now, however, with new adult eyes I reminisce on these fanciful tales and find hidden meaning woven within their fabric. With the genius of creatives like Tim Burton expanding on their foundations and exposing the dark truths which we choose to ignore when passing on these treasures to our kin, it’s no wonder I find myself madly drawn to and eagerly awaiting the release of “Alice in Wonderland.” Continue reading ‘Down the rabbit hole’
These days you can still do things from your grave, like win an Oscar, direct music videos and fight for animal rights.
A music video directed by Heath Ledger has now been released online. It shows a world where the whales are the hunters looking for their human prey. Shocking.
The video is for a song called King Rat by Modest Mouse. Please watch:
A call to action! Straight after Friday’s fish and chips.
Huge projections on famous buildings are nothing too new but I have never come across one quite as epic as this before. The entire front facade of the Kubik art gallery in Hamburg is transformed into a living, breathing animation that interacts beautifully with the surface it was designed to be projected upon. Art direction was by Daniel Rossa, who appears to have been involved in some very interesting projects in the past – definitely worth checking out his lovely site here. Continue reading ‘“How it would be, if a house was dreaming”’
For some Britons this could be a familiar title. I am talking about a TV program on BBC 2 at 9pm every Wednesday – and a new season just started recently – well…we are actually half way through at this point.
