Something i will definitely be checking out this weekend is the Shinganist exhibition at the StolenSpace Gallery on Brick Lane. Curated by Japanese artist Usugrow and containing works by all five Japanese artists who have recently contributed to his book of the same name, this exhibition promises to be pretty amazing. Think slightly dark graffiti, tattoos and skateboard decks all with a distinctly Japanese flavour and you’ll have a pretty good idea of what to expect. I’m most excited about seeing the pen & ink works by Usugrow himself (just cause I love that kind of stuff) but the other work on display also looks amazing. Check it out.
In the following video one of the most imaginative directors of our time talks about the importance of knowing what you want. No one likes too many changes in creative work; it’s about having a clear vision and making that happen. Remember with animation anything is possible -- just stretch that imagination a little.
Below are a few links to some of the best animations I have seen this year:
OneSize -- The American Dollar / Anything You Synthesize Link
Maxim Zhestkov -- Works Link
McBess -- Wood Link
Ari Folman -- Waltz with Bashir Link
Oren Lavie -- Her Morning Elagance Link
I recently came across a re-worded version of Bonnie Tyler’s classic music video, ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart.’ I couldn’t stop laughing and I’ve noticed more and more of this style of ‘music video’ are cropping up. Check it out -- genius!
Over the past weeks and months, curious posters, stickers and leaflets have been popping up all over downtown Toronto (anywhere else?) reading, simply, “Please help us Mrs Nixon.”
Well, today I finally Googled it. The communications had no call to action – no URL or contact info – nothing but a provocative little hand-written appeal…so the first thing that intrigues me; I actually took time, with no more information than that little sticker gave me, to go digging for answers. Well done, whoever you are. Continue reading ‘Change starts at home? Spouse-based communication…’
Tired of harbouring your deepest darkest secrets? Looking to confess? Well Twitter can help!
Secret Tweet (secrettweet.com) lets you to tell all (in 111 words or less of course) anonymously and instantly and receive support and sometimes helpful advice from complete strangers. It’s incredible to see so many people posting their most intimate thoughts from: “I’m slowly and carefully planning how to leave my husband of 20 years, while he’s planning the next phase in the garden” to “I am the one who reported you to child protective services. You WON’T hurt her anymore.”
The perfect place to unearth the plot for your next screen play …
You’ll have to forgive my pun-ning but I couldn’t resist. Just like I couldn’t resist doing the twist in the hallway of my building after I saw this video… but I’ll get to that.
Last summer, the popular Bud Light brand introduced the Lime flavoured option to the American market. The result -- massive sales on the southern side of the border and slew of devastated northerners. How did the Canucks respond to the slight? We took to Facebook where several Bud Light Lime petitions culminated in a May 2009 launch across Canada. Continue reading ‘Bud Light isn’t Sharing the Lime Light…’
It can be difficult to identify something you consider to be the greatest of its type. Asking someone their favourite song is likely to elicit responses along the lines of “I like lots… I don’t really have favourite… I couldn’t choose just one…” And questions about favourite films, books and TV shows will probably get the same result.
However, I can pick what I consider to be the greatest single 45 minutes of television that I know of. It’s the 1974 Christmas Special of the BBC sitcom Steptoe & Son. To get across why I think it’s so good, I recommend watching it, and for that we need the magic of YouTube. Now if you don’t have time to watch it I’ll give a short synopsis below but this is something best watching whole. Continue reading ‘The best television episode of all time?’
July 20th will see the 40th anniversary of the lunar landing celebrated.
As ever, it’s really interesting to see how the milestone anniversary of a historic event generates fresh angles on the highly publicised, already well-known event. Upon reflection, it often feels like the NASA team knew they were on the verge of something very special, captured so much footage…and it’s still fascinating to watch as the years have rolled by. To mark the special event this week, NASA has released newly-restored footage of the moon landings, which you can watch here. Continue reading ‘Celebrating mankind’s big step 40 years on’
I love that the Gregory Brothers’ wonderful political satire series, “Auto-Tune the News”, derives its name from a software program designed to tune a singers voice to the perfect pitch – turning the whiny voices of reality TV stars and celebutantes into albums full of mildly less whiny somewhat tolerable muzak. The brothers use the software to transform the ramblings of American political figures into completely tolerable and totally hilarious news raps.
We’ve all seen/been party to our fair share of bad dance fads -- the ones we did at school dances and now pull out only to elicit laughter and feel young and ignorant again; we’ve chicken danced, walked like Egyptians, done the YMCA or danced the macarena. As you all know, in fashion one day you’re in, and the next day you’re out.
It feels like yesterday I was taking hundreds upon hundreds of photos during the 2009 London Fall/Winter fashion week…but already designers have published their 2010 resort collections and we’ve seen all that the 2010 Spring/Summer men’s fashion shows have to offer. How fast the pace of fashion industry is! Continue reading ‘Yuan’s In – Yuan’s Out’
Please give me one good reason why this receipt is worth £30,000, because I really don’t know.
WTF? I have never used that term before but hey there’s a first for everything and no more so than in the art world. The latest rubbish to be classified as modern art is in the form of a ‘Morrison’s receipt’ by the artist Ceal Floyer on exhibit at the Tate Britain. You may remember past works from the artist such as ‘Drill’ or ‘Bucket’. Engaging stuff! Continue reading ‘I could do that + Yeah but you didn’t = Modern Art’
From the brothers who brought us Google Maps comes a revolutionary new app: Google Wave, hailed by the search engine giant as the ultimate online communication and collaboration tool. Continue reading ‘New Wave @ Google’
For those of you who don’t pay attention to the air safety films prior to takeoff, Air New Zealand may have developed a way to hold your gaze. Body paint. On selected internal flights the captain and crew who present these safety films do away with their clothes and adopt a more ‘figure hugging’ look. Continue reading ‘Bare essentials of air safety’
Fap fap fap fap… ehem… excuse me, I was just ‘admiring’ this amazing typographic piece designed by Malika Favre of Airside. The alphabet is based on an earlier design she made for the Airside store titled “Alphabunnies”, but has been adapted especially for Wallpaper* magazine’s sex themed July issue. Continue reading ‘Super Sexy Type’
On my little “tour” today on the web, I went to have a peek at FWA, favourite website awards. This is a great place to find out about cutting edge and fancy pieces of work. Continue reading ‘New Experience’
