I Call for a Revolution in Education

write

Just a thought. An irony occurred to Sophie and I at work this evening. Our education has failed us.

Now, we both sport impressive academics and yet deep in my heart I know my schooling left me ill-prepared for life ahead. You see, everything I was taught favoured expression in several-hundred, nay thousand, word essays. Long-form, detailed, verbose: deadly. Continue reading ‘I Call for a Revolution in Education’

As you all know, in fashion one day you’re in, and the next day you’re out.

So now that you’ve got your Little Black Dress…are you struggling to find the right shoes? This week, let’s take a look at some different styles and determine once and for all whether they’re in or out! Continue reading ‘Yuan’s In – Yuan’s Out’

Rip, Download and Play YouTube Videos Offline or in a Keynote Presentation

youtube-logoSo people are always bugging me for a way to convert / rip and use video from YouTube in a presentation. Now there used to be a great application for the Mac called Tube Sock, but this doesn’t seem to work anymore.

Here’s a simple process to make it all magically work.

Fiction to Reality: Did 24’s David Palmer really pave the way for Barack Obama?

capitol_ill_evidently

The ‘Palmer Effect’ has been discussed in several leading publications, both in the lead-up to and post- the election of Barack Obama. Dennis Haysbert, who played the role of David Palmer in the hit US series 24, believes that his role opened “the eyes of the American people [so] that they felt that they could vote for a black president without triggering the apocalypse.” Continue reading ‘Fiction to Reality: Did 24’s David Palmer really pave the way for Barack Obama?’

Brown Skin, Silver Screen

yasmin_top

Last night I was watching Kenny Glenaan’s 2004 film, Yasmin, a piece that focuses on the heightened cultural, religious and generational conflicts faced by British Muslims post 9/11. It’s one of the few British films that looks at Islamic fundamentalism in Britain and raises the very relevant question of whether Islam and Non-Islamic cultures can co-exist. Continue reading ‘Brown Skin, Silver Screen’

Little Big Planet

little-big-planet

As the festive season gets closer and takes some of us back to our childhood, what better time to share a new game with all of you? I’m sure you’ve already heard about it…it’s “Little Big Planet,” which came out last November in Europe, for Playstation3. Continue reading ‘Little Big Planet’

Leap of faith (and sheer lunacy)

Tandem skydive

So, in the new year, I’ll be throwing myself out of a plane for charity. It’s the first time I’ll be partaking in any sort of fun-raising, and though I should be terrified by the prospect…I’m really looking forward to it. Continue reading ‘Leap of faith (and sheer lunacy)’

The Rise of the Kyrgs

fierce_one

Kyrgyz cinema enjoyed great success under Soviet rule. With freedom of expression being encouraged in all artists under Krushchev’s regime in the 1960’s, directors like Tolomush Okeev were able to make films showing the Kyrgyz and their sensibilities within the wider frame of the Soviet Union. Okeev’s The Fierce One (Lutiy), pictured above, is a good example. Does talent really exist?

picture-3

What is talent? I don’t mean in the phwoar sense. I mean in the ‘gosh, he’s got a real gift for making meringues while critiquing early modern Polish poetry’ sense. A dictionary would claim ‘talent’ is natural aptitude. But what does this mean? When our success in life is governed by this elusive attribute, it’s a bit shaky if we can’t actually find out what it is. And how do you quantify talent? By output? That can’t be right: think of all the tortured geniuses out there. Continue reading ‘Does talent really exist?’

Sony feeling the pinch

recession

It’s hardly news to anyone that these are trying times economically. There are a lot of stories circulating regarding redundancies, loss management, job cuts, making companies more efficient. These all translate to one thing: the company isn’t making enough money to sustain the people it has. Continue reading ‘Sony feeling the pinch’

Shhhh…don’t tell Steve

_45264414_amazonmp3logo

Without so much as a press release, Amazon last week launched its own mp3 store in the UK, in an attempt to wrest control from the almighty Apple, and the iTunes store, which controls 70-80% of the market.

Being a big Amazon customer, I tried it out. Quite liked it for two reasons: Continue reading ‘Shhhh…don’t tell Steve’

Who wouldn’t want to see Justin Timberlake in a leotard?

0635398600

Are you having a dull afternoon, bored by your daily toil…or maybe just in need of a little leotard action?

Then have a look at Saturday Night Live’s parody of Beyonce’s new single “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)”… Continue reading ‘Who wouldn’t want to see Justin Timberlake in a leotard?’

Barnardo’s ad: does it pull at your heart strings rather than your wallet?

The Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) have to date received almost 400 complaints over the recent Barnardo’s “Break the Cycle” ad campaign (above), making it “one of the 10 most reported ads this year.” Continue reading ‘Barnardo’s ad: does it pull at your heart strings rather than your wallet?’

Prop 8 – The Musical

[vodpod id=ExternalVideo.757583&w=425&h=350&fv=key%3Dc0cf508ff8%26autostart%3Dfalse%26internal%3Dtrue]

Now I was in Los Angeles when Prop 8 passed. Not a high point for American democracy, freedom or equality for all. Quite why it’s so important to stop people living their lives as they see fit is still beyond me. But like any great moment of adversity, the musical has come to the rescue and this piece is quite timely. Starring Jack Black, John C Reiley and Doogie Howser MD, it’s really something. Yuan’s In – Yuan’s Out

Nicole Richie

As you all know, in fashion one day you’re in, and the next day you’re out. Almost as fast, we’re in December – and it’s absolutely freezing in London.

I have to say, this is the first time I realised how much Londonders love shopping. I had to wait for 10 minutes to cross from Oxford Street to Regent Street… and for 1 hour to check out in Topshop! Weekend shopping is crazy and a complete disaster… but I still enjoyed it. Continue reading ‘Yuan’s In – Yuan’s Out’

I Love My Livescribe Magic Pen

41n8dbsduhl_sl500_aa280_

My penchant for gadgets is legendarily fickle. Yet, I think true love has struck again. My new Livescribe pen is that very rare but brilliant combination of useful and practical. Put simply, the pen works like a normal writing device. Yes, it’s a little bit fatter than a normal pen (more Lammy than Cross)…and the only slight fly is that you must use Lightscribe’s proprietry paper…

Ugly Betty Evolution

dove-evolution

It may not be new but it seems few people have seen this Ugly Betty spoof of the highly successful Dove Evolution advert. Whilst technically not as masterful as the original it still manages to bring a smile to your face. Another excellent spoof of this advert is Slob Evolution which gives hope to all of us who yearn to become a slob one day.
