So far, little has been covered in the mass media over here in the UK about the internet’s most recent and shamelessly chaotic (and hellish/hilarious) addition to the social ‘interaction’ cauldron.
This is despite the fact that its numbers have reportedly soared from a few hundred into the dozens of thousands since its launch last December. Why, it’s chatroulette.com of course and it’s based on the simple premise of bringing complete strangers face to face via webcam until one or the other decides they’ve had enough of you..and clicks onto the next.
Wonderful. Or is it?
Well no, it isn’t…because of the few who spoil it for the many, or in this case the many who spoil it for the few.
Enter at your own risk!
You didn’t misread the headline… I’m deadly serious, after 23 years of spending millions on Super Bowl advertising Pepsi has decided to opt out this year in favour of putting their money into a social media project they’re calling, The Pepsi Refresh Project. Continue reading ‘Pepsi Ditches the Super Bowl…’
Well, not quite 99 … ok, ten. Red balloons may be seen ‘floating in the summer (cough) sky’ of America this week, after the US defence research agency released them from secret locations, to test the communicative power of social networking sites.
On December 7th, Starbucks and (RED) gathered musicians from all over the world to join in the first ever global sing-a-long in support of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS. At exactly 8:30am ET voices around the world joined together to sing The Beatles classic, ‘All You Need is Love.’ Continue reading ‘Starbucks Spreads the Love…’
As a kid, I was always itching to get my hands on a violin. I’m not even particularly musical; I just really wanted those violin lessons. A decade later, I can definitely see why my parents might have wanted to avoid the screeching sounds of tortured cat gut floating serenely through the house. Nowadays though, it looks like parents might not have to fork out to enable their children to take lessons from professional musicians.

I’m sure we’ve all had those days… you’re watching a film, maybe it’s not in your native language, or you’re watching Christian Bale speaking as though he’s swallowed some grit in order to play Batman. It’s tricky to make out the wise words of the hero. Logically, you flip on the subtitles. But what if you didn’t need the screen to do this? What if the subtitles could be beamed directly into your eye, like laser translation?

November the month of remembrance… whose rain was immortalised by an 80’s hair band that shall remain nameless… but it is also the month of Mo’s! Continue reading ‘November is Sooo 2002…’

Upon discovering this month that I am a mere two degrees from Kevin Bacon I’ve wondered what else I might be degrees away from… Continue reading ‘Six Degrees of Honda?’
Microsoft has spent the past couple of years bowing to the mighty advertising machine that is Apple, a brand that speaks to consumers about the literal benefits of owning a Mac while trashing the PC as old, out-of-touch and boring; so the drastic change in Microsoft’s marketing tactics have taken many a consumer by surprise. Continue reading ‘From Family Friendly to Family Guy…’
Amazon’s Kindle…it was announced today that the International Use version is now available. 3G wireless in over 100 countries worldwide. Is it the death of literature as we know it? The invasion of technology resulting in the death of tradition? Or is it a way to encourage kids to read more novels, access several texts on one bus journey, and a logically progressive step forward?
We live in a society where the faster we get something the better it is, we praise speed and efficiency in almost every aspect of our lives and why shouldn’t we? We are busy, important people who want what we want and we want it now. Continue reading ‘Starshmucks Forgets Branding 101….’
Do you find yourself missing your mate, the one who made you feel whole, your perfect match in this imperfect world? Well then Green Thing has the solution for you… at least if you happen to be a glove. Continue reading ‘Single Gloves Find Love…’
I know, I know, a literature-based piece from the book obsessed newbie… but I went to see ‘Dorian Gray’ last week on the feeble basis that The Picture of Dorian Gray is one of my most re-read and loved books, and also that Ben Barnes is a bit of a hottie!

Crop circles are no longer fodder for terrible Mel Gibson movies and the stories of small town America…at least they won’t be if Google has anything to say about it. The mysterious crop circle logo showed up again on Tuesday of this week, the second alien reference this month, only this time Google employed Twitter.com to share a set of map co-ordinates leading internet users to: 51.327629, -0.5616088. According to Guardian News, the co-ordinates lead to a small town in Surrey, Horsell, made famous by H.G. Wells as the location of the first UFO landing in the classic 1898 novel “War of the Worlds”.
TED talks is a global movement that brings us together in the name of, “ideas worth spreading.”
Always inspirational the speaker has 18 minutes to give “the best talk of their life” -- which seems unfair considering the audience has infinitely longer to let the new idea grow and morph and become something more. Continue reading ‘TEDxTO…’
I’m never surprised by the odd and somewhat colourful things I see in Toronto, it’s just a part of living in “the most multi-cultural city in the world”… I’ve accepted the crowded transit, the costumed fans (OK so that was extra visible this past weekend because of the FanExpo), the random protests, the loud and frequently wild Friday nights… but hugs from strangers outside the Eaton Centre: THAT made this somewhat jaded Torontonian look twice… Continue reading ‘Free Love…’

Maddicts, for those of you who aren’t completely obsessed with the popular AMC show are Mad Men addicts…
Recently I noticed a rash of animated Facebook and Twitter profile photos and upon further investigation discovered Mad Men Yourself, a website that invites users to create an animated icon of themselves in the chic 50’s style of Mad Men. So while enjoying a quick lunch I decided to make myself an icon… insert nerdy advertising joke of your choice here… Continue reading ‘Listen Up Maddicts…’

Canadians all over the country enjoyed a small victory yesterday when the iconic Tim Hortons brand announced that they would not, after all, be sponsoring “Marriage & Family Day” hosted by the National Organisation for Marriage (NOM) an American association that campaigns against gay marriage.
You’ll have to forgive my pun-ning but I couldn’t resist. Just like I couldn’t resist doing the twist in the hallway of my building after I saw this video… but I’ll get to that.
Last summer, the popular Bud Light brand introduced the Lime flavoured option to the American market. The result -- massive sales on the southern side of the border and slew of devastated northerners. How did the Canucks respond to the slight? We took to Facebook where several Bud Light Lime petitions culminated in a May 2009 launch across Canada. Continue reading ‘Bud Light isn’t Sharing the Lime Light…’
I love that the Gregory Brothers’ wonderful political satire series, “Auto-Tune the News”, derives its name from a software program designed to tune a singers voice to the perfect pitch – turning the whiny voices of reality TV stars and celebutantes into albums full of mildly less whiny somewhat tolerable muzak. The brothers use the software to transform the ramblings of American political figures into completely tolerable and totally hilarious news raps.
We’ve all seen/been party to our fair share of bad dance fads -- the ones we did at school dances and now pull out only to elicit laughter and feel young and ignorant again; we’ve chicken danced, walked like Egyptians, done the YMCA or danced the macarena. As you all know, in fashion one day you’re in, and the next day you’re out.
It feels like yesterday I was taking hundreds upon hundreds of photos during the 2009 London Fall/Winter fashion week…but already designers have published their 2010 resort collections and we’ve seen all that the 2010 Spring/Summer men’s fashion shows have to offer. How fast the pace of fashion industry is! Continue reading ‘Yuan’s In – Yuan’s Out’
